Ukraine is the second-largest European country after Russia. It borders Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest. Kyiv is the nation's capital and largest city. There is a number of official institutions authorised to work out and adopt the orthographic, grammatical and lexical norms of the Ukrainian language; the most important are: The National Commisssion for the Snadards of the State Language, The Oleksandr Potebnia Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, The Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
